Family-Based Telemedicine vs. Inpatient Anorexia Nervosa Treatment (FIAT) Study

We, the Berlin FIAT team at the Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy in Childhood and Adolescence at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, would like to improve the care situation for children and adolescents suffering from anorexia nervosa (AN) in collaboration with many other clinicians and scientists throughout Germany!

Therefore, we are conducting the FIAT study, the largest study to date investigating family-based therapy (FBT) in comparison to inpatient multimodal therapy (IMT).

When children or adolescents are severely unwell with AN, IMT often helps them, providing close meal supervision as well as individual, group and nutritional therapies and other individualised support. In other countries, children and adolescents suffering from AN are often treated on an outpatient basis within the family; FBT has proven to be very effective in many studies and  consequently is used as standard practice in Anglo-Saxon countries. With the FIAT study, we want to compare FBT with IMT for the first time and support 200 children and adolescents in their recovery process.

Since July 2024, the FIAT team at the Charité has been coordinating their collaboration with a total of 20 clinics throughout Germany, training approximately 50 FBT therapists and making FBT available to 200 study families throughout Germany for the time being.

The FIAT study is funded by the Innovation Fund with a total of around €7 million and will run until June 2028.

If your child has AN and meets the inclusion criteria, we would be delighted to hear from you. We will then refer you to the appropriate study centre in your area.

Please feel free to browse our website to find out more about IMT and FBT, the study eligibility criteria and the study procedure. If you have any questions or are interested in the study, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time!

"We have already spoken to many people and shared our positive experiences with this treatment method at the Charité. Unfortunately, no one had heard of it before we told them about it – and that includes doctors and therapists. That really needs to change. "
